Cloth Diapers

So people that knew me when Rex was first born know we used cloth diapers and we did so until close to his first birthday. My mom did all the research for us and we got the bum genius 3.0 and we loved them. The only reason why we stopped using them was because all of a sudden Rex started getting a diaper rash that left his poor bottom fire engine red. We bought disposables and I washed and tried and washed and dried and washed and dried and they just kept giving him a rash so I packed them up until I could give the company a call. Well it's been a year later and I finally made that call. They let me know that it was just soap build up and that I needed to just use Dawn Original Soap with some bleach and to rinse them until I see no suds and then rinse again just to make sure and then they should be fine. During that year off I got spoiled with using disposables and it is going to be a long hard road back but it's something that needs to be done. With M leaving his job and now venturing out on his own we need to do our best with keeping as much of our money as we can. I feel like this is something that I can help with my just switching back to cloth diapers. We spend at least $100 a month on diapers and wipes but if I do cloth then our water bill will go up about $5 to $10 a month. That is a huge savings!
I'm pretty excited to get started again but also nervous. It has been a long time and it is more work than just throwing a diaper in the trash, especially when we are out and about. I know I can do it and originally made the commitment to follow through until potty training, I just got a year off on that commitment and now it's time to go back. I have the diapers in the wash right now as I type, the drying line outside ready to go tomorrow morning, and then by tomorrow afternoon we will be starting this adventure all over again.
The pictures that I included are all about his cloth diapers. The first and second ones are just stinkin' cute! The other ones were things that we did while using cloth diapers. We did much more than this but we went hiking up in the beautiful Rocky Mountains and sledding when it finally snowed that winter. We played at parks, had babysitters, went for walks, went to a bunch of doctors and specialist appointments, played at home, slept...etc. There really isn't much that you can't do with cloth diapers that you can with disposables. Activities are easy and you can just throw the diapers in the wash at the end of the day on the longest wash cycle (because they should be rinsed enough) and then dry them in the morning. I normally have 2 to 4 diapers left over if I wash every other day so I have plenty of time to let them dry outside or in the dryer the next morning.

I will keep you posted on our progress with getting back into the swing of cloth diapering.

Update after this post.

  1. I stopped with my son too when he started getting TERRIBLE rashes from the cloths.

I've just now gotten him back into them though. And so far no rashes!

  2. Good luck! We went through a stage where we used disposables at night with my daughter and cloth during the day. It helped a lot! Also, I've started throwing some baking soda into the prewash cycle and vinegar into the rinse cycle of washing - it seems to be helping with build-up and smells. And it's cheap, too!

Happy Father's Day!

Today is father's day and most people are getting together and celebrating with family. Dads, grandpas and uncles all celebrating together the joys of being a father. Maybe getting a chance to relax and enjoy just sitting around watching the kids play and being surrounded with family. That's what father's day has always looked like for us. We would always gather at my parents house. First, with my grandparents when I was growing up for dinner and a day of enjoying being together. Then as I grew older my sister and I would make sure to spend the day with our dad. Then we got married and had kids of our own and the tradition continued. We would bring all the kids and enjoy BBQing at my parents house enjoying time together. This year things are different. We can't just jump in the car and head over for a BBQ. We can't sit around on the couch or on the patio talking and laughing together. This year we are 12 hours away from where I've always been for father...

12 Week Bumpdate

Yesterday we had our 12 week ultrasound and I enjoyed it so much! We were able to see our baby's face and she  (we didn't find anything out about the sex just hard to talk without he's and she's) had her hands up by her face. It was so cute. We also have a very stubborn child. The poor tech had such a hard time trying to get the measurements that she needed. She kept trying to get the baby to move. She had me move trying to get to the baby to move and nothing. So we were able to enjoy watching our baby on the screen for at least 20 minutes while she did her best to get the pictures she needed.  I'm a little bummed by the photo she gave us to take home. There were so many good photos where you could see so much and then right at the end she gave us a quick photo that isn't great but I will share it anyway. Like I said bad right. Well so it can help the baby's head in on the right side, Her hand is the white blob in front of her face and then you can b...

The ABC's of Our Family

I got a great idea from this lovely  blog  about doing a ABC photo book through out the year. Each week taking one photo that goes along with a letter. I have seen lots of great ideas for different photo blog ideas but all seem like to much work and something that I know I wouldn't be able to do. This one seems reasonable for our crazy life.  So to start off I have chose a great picture that I took of Rex and M playing together one day when he got home from work. Rex is so ADORABLE in this picture I just knew this was what I had to use! Plus I already know what I'm using for next week even though the picture hasn't been taken yet.  So here it is.......ADORABLE Rex playing with his Daddy! Oh I just can't get enough of this guy. Also as a little side note to how adorable he is...he kept posing for the camera once I got. He didn't care that Mommy was watching him play and wouldn't even look at me but soon as the camera was out he had to keep turning and...
