Homeschooling...How Do You Choose?

In homeschooling there are so many options...
  • Classical Homeschooling
  • Charlotte Mason Homeschooling
  • Unschooling
  • Unit Studies
  • Montessori
Then you start looking at all the different types of curriculums you can buy...
  • Sonlight
  • My Father's World
  • Saxton
  • Abeka
  • Online Homeschools and Private Schools
It can become so overwhelming! I went to school for teaching. I completed my associates degree in human services with an emphasis on early childhood education. I taught in all different age classrooms while getting my degree and had my own pre-kindergarten classroom for a year before I became a personal nanny. Then Monkey came along and I never returned to work. If anyone can homeschool especially at this age it should be me! I've taught this age before. The problem is I'm homeschooling because I don't want to send Monkey or Goose off to a traditional school that has class for 7 hours or more a day with homework. I don't want to simply do school at home. That I could do. I want something different for my boys.

So how do I choose? Where do I begin? It's been something that I've been trying to figure out for 6 years now but I think I finally have it figured out (at least for this year)!

We don't have the money to waste spend on a boxed curriculum even if that's what I wanted to do. So instead we are going to spend our time at the library getting all types of books that interest the boys. We are going to do our own mix of unit studies and unschooling.

There is no way that I could be comfortable in my house doing complete unschool. I have been reading about it for months because the idea of doing school different at home is what I have always wanted. I don't want my children to label themselves in a grade. I want them to work hard on learning what is interest to them and have fun doing it. But I can't get on board with not having any structured learning. I can't wrap my mind around them "learning math when they are ready". Or when they need or want to write something they will then learn to write. I think some things just need to be taught sitting down together working through it. But I love that unschooling allows the freedom to choose the topics of interest that they boys want and the learning at whatever level they are ready for.

We are currently studying about the body. They are learning names of bones, what muscles do, and all about the different systems in their body and how they work together. They are really enjoying it! This is where unit studies are going to come in. We choose the body first because Monkey wanted to know why we have hair on our arms. I'm challenging them to find the answers to their questions while they expand their interests into a wide range of information that can follow on simple question.

I think unschooling and unit studies will work great for our homeschool. At least for now. If there is one thing I have learned from reading and talking to other homeschool families is that homeschool changes all the time. Never think you figured something out because then you are just going to have to change it next time.

Day 2 of 31 Day to Clean

So I have told you the other day that I'm going to start 31 Days to Clean by Sara Mae. (For that post go to 31 days to clean post). So I'm finally on day 2 after several days in between. This will be the way it is for me because not everyday I will be able to tackle a big task, like day number 2, but I did it today and that is what counts. So what was day 2...clean the refrigerator and freezer (at least the Martha part) so that's what I did. I cleaned the refrigerator not that long ago but I figured I would just do it again and I'm glad. Just after about 2 months (maybe 3) it really needed cleaned again and I'm really happy that it looks really nice and I can find all the stuff that is in there again. I think that I'm going to put this on my To Do list every other month. I think that would be really helpful and that way it stays clean. I'm just going to put it in my day planner and when I have some free time on day I will do it that month. Sounds like a pl...

WEDDING! Part 2: The Day Of

**Warning more Picture overload!** I couldn't help it! WEDDING DAY! (August 6, 2005) On our wedding day I was so excited! I got ready at my parents house and J. and the guys got ready at our house. It was so much fun to get our hair done at a long time friends  hair salon .  After that we headed over to my parents house to start getting ready.    Everyone was busy getting me ready and many people were up my dress trying to get my 'fluff' to stay up so I didn't have to hold my dress us when walking.  My dad was kicked out of the house until I was done. I wanted him to get the whole sh-a-bang when he walked in. This was interesting. I had to climb into the truck but was not allowed to step on the tailgate and I couldn't see my feet. It was so funny! It looks like we were going fast but we really weren't but that's how we got to the park.  THE CEREMONY! After all that hard work to make it so I ...

Monkey's Surgery

So I finally downloaded pictures and I thought I'd share the cute pictures of my little boy after his surgery he had in April. No one should have surgery at 3 years old but poor little Monkey had to have his gallbladder removed due to his blood disorder called spherecytosis.  I had to stay in bed with him afterwards. He didn't want me to go anywhere. However, being pregnant made it so I had to use the bathroom quite often so luckily he was OK with Aunt Tiffany or Grandma holding his hand while I went. He hadn't been aloud to eat for almost 48 hours. He was starving! He ate almost the whole plate of pancakes and the nurses were shocked he could eat so much. They kept encouraging us to get him up and out of the room later in the afternoon after the surgery. So we headed out in the wagon first. He wasn't to happy about being moved and we made him walk a little bit in the room but he was glad to be out.  Granny and Great Po...
