So this summer I planned out our pre-homeschool. I bought a lesson plan book and wrote (luckily in pencil) what I planned to do through the first of the year. Well....that has all changed! The way I originally planned things was based on my experience as a pre-school teacher. At home this doesn't work. I only have one child, I have to buy everything that I need, and things are always coming up and changing.
So...how do I deal with the change........
I am embracing it! I love what it is becoming! I grab a big eraser and got rid of all the plans I had already made and I'm starting over.
The last 2 weeks were our first and our trial run to see what works. I decided to start with the letter D and to learn all about Dinosaurs because there is a great dinosaur exhibit at the museum. We got books from the library that talked about all different D words and of course a bunch of dinosaur books.
After our 2 weeks is over Rex can identify the letter D both big and little in titles of books. When asked what letter starts certain words he will tell you D. He also knows the names of the Tyrannosaurus, velociraptor, brachiosaurus, diplodocus (these look similar so he can't tell the difference but uses them correctly in certain books), triceratops, and pteranodon. He loves watching Dinosaur Train and because they do themes (like Halloween this week) we can continue to tie them into our lessons.
So for this week and next week we are learning about the letter P for pumpkins along with Halloween. We have close to 15 Halloween/pumpkin books, coloring pages with pumpkins and have been counting a bunch.
With everything that has gone on this week so far we have achieved much more than this. However, I really want to start getting into a more daily routine of working together in the morning and then again in the afternoon if possible (or just afternoon on days that we are busy in the mornings). The reason behind this...besides just the fact that I need to teach him...he keeps asking to do homework on the days that it just doesn't seem to fit in. He's so excited to learn more and more that it just seems crazy not to help him learn now.
So my plan is to finish planning out activities for this week and next week. Also to look and find books for our next theme (first I need a theme). I will then each week try to plan another set of 2 week lesson themed activities with books to check out from the library, coloring pages to print, and games/activities/mom's group get-together's that match.
Hopefully I will remember to take some pictures to share with you all over this Pumpkin/Halloween learning weeks. The pumpkin patch started it off and he had so much fun there. I can't wait until this weekend when we go to the Butterfly Pavilion with my sisters family and Boo at the Zoo the following weekend and craving pumpkins and seeing the seeds and counting with them, sorting with them, and making art work out of them. Best of all eating the pumpkin seeds. We should have some pretty fun activities coming up with lots of learning opportunities.
I have to say I love this pre-homeshooling so much more than teaching in a pre-school. I'm able to do some much more and have more fun. There is no one here breathing down my back and pressuring me to always do better. Actually it is the exact opposite. People are normally shocked at home much Rex knows already and the way he talks and acts. I'm so grateful to be able to be in this position. The years to come are going to be so much fun!
I would love to hear or have you share a link to a post about your favorite activities that you have done with your kids that I might be able to use to. Homeschool or not just favorite things to do that help your child learn!
