Well I let Monkey turn 6 :) I wasn't sure I was going to allow it but we decided it could be fun to have a 6 year old in the house. And man did we celebrate. We celebrated for several days! We were lucky to have his cousins home for the weekend so they had fun playing all day and we put together a quick birthday dinner party.
Mama made a trip into the town to get supplies and since there was a Dollar Tree close by I stopped to get some fun water fight toys. Hubby and I joined in and had a blast squirting the kids. Next time I need to get more so we can all join in at the same time. I think the boys played for at least an hour with the water. And it was a nice 80 some degrees outside so it was a perfect day to enjoy some cold water.
We were able to skype with my parents as he opened presents they sent him and they really enjoyed watching him open his presents. I think his favorite gift was his tie dye shirt from Popa and his new penguin strategy game from Grandma. He loves playing the game by himself especially after I explain that it will help his brain grow and help him become smart by playing. It gave him encouragement to keep trying instead of getting frustrated and giving up. I planned on trying out my first THM plan approved cake that everyone raves about but instead I saw this Ninja Turtle cake at the store and thought I'd rather enjoy the day playing with Monkey than in the kitchen trying to make one. And it was a big hit! Anything with superheroes would have been a success. And with the new work we have been doing on our house (which I haven't shared yet but will soon as I write it) we were able to have a pretty large bon fire which is one of Monkey's favorite things since we've moved to the country. He would have one every night if we would allow it. And then what's the perfect way to end a birthday party? Making it last into the next day with a sleepover. Monkey's first sleepover on his 6th birthday. They watched a movie, headed to bed and I didn't even have to get on them to go to sleep. I think they were all exhausted from a busy day of parting. But it didn't end there! His cousins didn't have school so they were able to play together all day Monday and have leftover cake after lunch. Then Tuesday came, Monkey's actual birthday and we headed to the zoo!The OKC Zoo is amazing! It's so much better than the Denver Zoo. I really love the habitats that the animals live in and it's pretty throughout the whole zoo. It's doesn't feel like you are in the city. It doesn't feel like there is concrete everywhere. It actually feels like you are out exploring nature. It's great. And it's HUGE! We spent at least 4 hours there and made it through only half the zoo! We missed quite a bit of it but I love it because when we go back with my parents when they come to visit it won't be boring to the boys because we will be exploring a whole new part and seeing new animals again. We did buy a membership, which was a lot cheaper than the Denver Zoo as well, so we can go back monthly and have a great day out exploring and playing and enjoying time together outside the house. Overall, it was a great birthday for Monkey with lots of celebrating and having fun which is exactly what a 6 year old wants!
