We love reading in our house. Monkey loves books! The problem is he would prefer non-fiction books to fiction. So to settle this I thought about ways that I could help him with his imagination and encourage some fiction books as well.
When I was a pre-kindergarten teacher I loved reading Jack and Annie books to the kids while they were laying down for nap time. I would read a few chapters right in the beginning to help them all get settled down from our activities. They loved them!
Of course when I started thinking of ways to encourage Monkey to love fiction books as well The Magic Treehouse Books came to mind. I checked out the first book from the library, Dinosaurs Before Dark, and took it home and read the first chapter with him.
Monkey was so excited to read it, mostly because it was about dinosaurs, but it kept his attention! We read it within a few days, partly because I tried to slow it down because we didn't have the next book to start. I requested the second book, The Knights at Dawn, and as soon as it was in we headed back to the library to pick it up.
While driving to the library we reviewed the book. I asked questions like, "What is Annie's brother's name?" Monkey responded, "Jack!" I asked, "Where did they go in the Magic Treehouse?" Monkey said, "To the dinosaurs!" Followed that question by asking, "What happened to Jack?" Monkey explained, "The pteranodon saved him from the T-Rex!"
Monkey knew exactly what happened! At 3 years old he could recall a full children's chapter book! I was thrilled! So of course I was thrilled to get the next set of books!
Now we are on book number five! He has loved each one and begs me to keep reading them! I'm so excited that he loves listening to the books and the pictures that they have through each chapter helps him picture what is going on. I love that this is a way that I can help him start learning at such a young age. I can just see him in the years to come reading book after book because we show him how fun reading can be!
Please follow my blog for more book reviews, both kids and adults, and other fun things that I do with my boys. And if you enjoyed this post I would love it if you took a second to vote for me on Top Mommy Blogs by clicking the banner on the top ;)
