Times of Doubt

Some days I wonder if my child is going to be anti-social.  Today is one of those days. At the library today they have a special play time and then a music class which has grown to be a very large group of kids about 6 and under. While the classes change all the kids go into the children's area to play. I watch the other kids run and play and interact with each other while my son chooses to sit and read books and during the structured activities he participates about half the time but he's so quiet compared to everyone else.
Then right when I start to question if I'm doing enough with him outside of the house I think of days like yesterday when we were at a friends house. There were 4 of us moms, 7 kids and 3 babies. Monkey had a blast! He loved playing with his friends. He has some great friends that he's really close with and really enjoys spending time with.
So when I start to question what I'm doing and before I start trying to plan more things into our already over crowded schedule I need to remember that Monkey is just the type of child that needs a few close friends and not a large group. I need to remember that one of the reasons I love that I'm a homemaker and homeschooling is because Monkey wouldn't do well in a typical school setting. He wouldn't be successful in a room full of other children.
Do any other homemakers or homeschooling mama's have the same moments of doubt? How do you not give in to it?

  1. I'm a stay-at-home mother of two kids. One is 5 and the other is 1. My 5 year old is very shy and I've wondered if not getting him out and around others too much has anything to do with it. I've noticed my 1 year old is starting to be the same too. I put my son in preschool and he did well but was very shy and didn't talk much unless he was asked to answer a question. I'm not going to home school so he's off to kindergarten in a few months. I'm hoping he'll get used to being around others and lose that shyness but I've also learned that I have to embrace this personality. My husband and I were both always shy people too. Some kids are naturally very outgoing and some aren't. That's okay. I'm sure your son is fine and will be okay. When introducing him to new people tell him it's okay to talk to them and interact with them. I like having a few close friends then a whole bunch too. Sounds like your son is very smart. I wouldn't worry.

  2. Thank you so much for your comment! I'm actually reading the book "The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child" by Marti Olsen Laney and it is really good so far. It really explains his personality in a way that I can understand. I actually more of an introvert myself so I know its ok to be shy but I also remember the struggles I had growing up. Actually struggles I still deal with today as God pushes me into uncomfortable roles like leading a moms group. It sounds like this book would be helpful to you too. They talk about how to help your child in experiences like school and ways to prepare them for the extroverted world.

Baby Bumpdate: Week 35

35 Weeks! That means only 5 left!!!! Holy cow!!! I think I'm starting to freak out just a little!!! How far along? 35 Weeks! Yea! How big is baby?  He's about 18 inches and just over 5 pounds. Weight gain? I gained a pound last week. Maternity Clothes?  Of course. I'm living in tanks right now because of the heat. Just wish I had more shorts to wear. Stretch Marks?  Nothing new. Just the ones from before and Monkey. Sleep? With this cold I'm not sleeping much. I'm getting a little better and able to sleep about 4 to 6 hours at night and then at nap time I'm able to get 1 or 2 more hours of sleep. However, I'm still exhausted especially because of the heat. It just drains all my energy. Even when I'm sitting in the shade under a fan. Of course it's only June so I'm not sure how this heat thing will effect me in July :/ Best Moment this Week?  Monkey kissing my belly before he went down for a nap. It was so cute. He ...

Media Monday: How it affects my child

Media is neither good or bad. Last week I talked about media in our marriage and a little bit about our family and media but today is all about Rex and media. Rex loves cartoons! Right now he happens to be watching Veggie Tales while eating lunch. This is not a normal thing at all. I can't remember the last time he was eating while watching TV. Today we had a crazy time and he asked to watch a movie and I didn't have a problem with it. Plus it's Veggie Tales.  We have a limit (during mommy in charge time) that he is only allowed to watch one movie/TV show each day and some days we don't watch anything. When daddy gets home things change and the TV is on within minutes of being home. Rex normally doesn't care that the TV is on because of our daily activities. He plays or helps me cook unless daddy is watching adult cartoons then he is more interested.  This past winter I found us watching more TV than I planned ever to let my children watch. So once it start...

Bikini Body Mommy Challenge Update!

So we are starting week 8 (I think). It's been a few weeks since I have officially sat down and updated on how I have been doing. Week 6 I did pretty good. The 4 am workouts were starting to wear on me so I decided to try and get a workout in after my hubby left for work but before the kids got up. Some days that went OK and other days not so well. I did however get several workouts in with the boys awake and they went pretty well. Monkey tired to join in with me and it was quite fun to watch. Of course he couldn't keep up with the workouts and took many breaks but it was fun to have him involved. This week I plan to do cardio days at 4 am in the gym because they are easier than trying to complete in the house. But for the non-cardio days I will do them in the house in the morning. That way I'm not completely exhausted everyday. Now for week 7. I have no idea even what the workouts were for last week. I didn't even look once! I have good reason though. My hubby h...
